Kolona and the mobile objects that power it offer profound capabilities for users, application developers, and system architects. A recent survey of mobile object technologies conducted for the FAA characterized Kolona as especially applicable to the abstraction of infrastructure in large-scale, highly distributed environments. Of the five commercial mobile object systems studied, Kolona was the most reliable and interoperable.
